Original poetry by Ima Essien
In recognition of National Poetry Month, The El Segundo Scene will be publishing some poetry by our editorial intern, local high-school student-writer Ima Essien.
Enjoy!

Who would you be if you weren’t afraid?
Would you be on the moon viewing the stars without a magnifying glass?
Or would you be on stage dancing in front of your peers?
Are you climbing Mount Everest or speaking your truth?
Wearing the outfit no one dares to imagine
Or confessing your love to the one you can’t stop imagining
Is it you that’s afraid?
Afraid of the consequences
Opinions
Stares
Comments
Tears
Love
Success
They say the only way through is to conquer it
But symptoms may include
Trembling
Stuttering
Laughs
but only in my mind
The doctor has yet to confirm that these will occur
but you believe it
Belief is easy
Overcoming obstacles is not
But who would you be if you weren’t afraid?
Would you be human?
