Fire-Prevention Week Poster Winners Honored

El Segundo observed Fire Safety and Prevention Week 2019 with an award ceremony for local winners of the city’s 72nd annual fire-prevention youth poster contest. This year’s contest, put on by the El Segundo Fire Department and El Segundo Rotary Club, centered on the theme “Not every hero wears a cape. Plan and practice your escape!” Seven local elementary-school children were chosen as winners based on how well they illustrated this theme in their posters, and Rotary hosted them and their parents at an October 10 luncheon. Also present at the luncheon were several members of the El Segundo Fire Department, including Battalion Chief Deena Lee and Fire Marshal James Carver, as well as ESUSD Superintendent Melissa Moore and principals of Richmond Street School and Center Street School Dr. Alice Lee and Dr. Martha Monahan, respectively.

The children received swag bags and congratulations from Rotary and ESFD, and everyone in attendance was treated to a demonstration by Chief Lee and firefighter Alissa Connell.

First-place winners: Kevin Hardy and Madeleine Ferrier

Second-place winners: Gianna Holm and Kathleen Lane

Third-place winners: Isla McCullough, Ishaan Srivastava, and Nola Davidson
