Explore Something New: Free September Events at El Segundo Public Library

You didn't still think libraries were just for checking out books, did you?

Here we are in the middle of September, enjoying some chilly evenings, the start of school, the beginning of soccer and football seasons, and fresh starts. The change of season also brings some brand-new, innovative (and always free) community events and workshops to our local library, under the leadership of director Melissa McCollum. Interested in free outdoor meditation, live music events, or DIY programs? Read on! And consider exploring something new at El Segundo Public Library beyond the usual book check-out.

FREE CONCERT IN THE LIBRARY

Tomorrow, Saturday September 15, the delightfully named Velvet Frogs Barbershop Quartet sings old favorites with multiple harmonies at the library from 2-4pm. Simply show up and enjoy!

MEDITATION IN LIBRARY PARK

Practice mindfulness in a green, serene setting in Library Park on Wednesday, September 19, from noon to 1:00. Free, and planned in conjunction with El Segundo Recreation & Parks.

EXCEL BASICS CLASS

Are you as intimidated by spreadsheets and formulas as I am? (I'm not afraid to admit it!) If so, don't miss this free beginner class on Microsoft's Excel software on September 21 from 8:30-10am.

MAKER MONDAY: FAIRY JARS

Unleash your inner maker and exercise your creativity! Bring a few mementos and personal items with which to build a fun little fairy jar for displaying or gift-giving on Monday, September 24, noon to 1pm.

BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP

Join like-minded book lovers for a discussion of Fatima Farheen Mirza's A Place for Us, on Wednesday, September 26 at 6:30pm.

READ THE BOOK? SEE THE FILM! PUBLIC SCREENING

Come enjoy a free screening of either Jurassic Park OR The Hunger Games at the library on Saturday, September 29 at 1pm. But first, vote on which of these two films (adapted from wildly popular novels) the library should screen! The public will choose: dinosaurs or dystopia? Vote at the library, then show up on the 29th to see the winning film!
